How to Recreate a Beach-Style Cold Brew at Home

With National Coffee Day and Fair Trade Month coming around, Beach City Coffee is giving coffee lovers another reason to make their morning cup feel a little more special. The women-owned specialty coffee brand is offering 25% off from September 29 through October 6, including its fair trade organic coffees and its coastal-inspired cold brew.

As a home cook who enjoys turning café-style drinks into something I can make in my own kitchen, the idea of a coastal cold brew immediately caught my attention. I wanted something cold, creamy, slightly sweet, and fun enough to feel different from my usual iced coffee. Instead of simply pouring cream into cold brew, I used a BombPop flavoured nitrous oxide to make a flavored whipped topping. The result is a colorful, dessert-like cold brew with a refreshing coffee base and a nostalgic fruity finish.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Cold Brew Coffee

Start with about 8–10 ounces of cold brew. You can use homemade cold brew or a ready-to-drink version. I prefer a medium or medium-dark roast because the slightly stronger coffee flavor holds up well against the sweet cream topping.

If you are using Beach City Coffee, you can choose whichever fair trade organic blend fits your taste. Their Locals Only blend, for example, has tasting notes of apple, brown sugar, and golden raisin, which can work nicely with a fruity topping.

Cream or Milk Base

For the topping, I usually use heavy cream because it produces a thicker and more stable foam. You can add a small amount of milk if you prefer something lighter.

The goal is not to make a huge amount of whipped cream. You only need enough to create a generous layer over the cold brew, so I recommend starting with a small batch when making this for the first time.

BombPop Flavor Cream Charger

This is where I add the fun part. A bombpop flavor whipped cream charger can give the topping a fruity, nostalgic character without requiring me to measure several separate flavorings.

Use a food-grade charger that is designed for culinary applications and a compatible whipped cream dispenser. The charger should be used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 1: Make the Cold Brew Coffee

Making the cold brew from scratch takes a little planning, but it is actually one of the easiest parts of this recipe. I usually start with coarsely ground coffee and cold or room-temperature filtered water. A simple ratio of 1 part coffee to 4 parts water works well for a concentrated cold brew that can later be diluted with ice or a little water.

Add the coffee grounds to a large jar or pitcher, then slowly pour in the water. Stir gently to make sure all of the grounds are completely saturated. Cover the container and let it steep in the refrigerator for about 12–16 hours. I usually make it the night before so it is ready the next morning.

Once the coffee has finished steeping, strain it through a fine-mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter or use a dedicated cold brew filter. Take your time with this step rather than pressing the grounds, since squeezing them can make the finished coffee more bitter or cloudy.

Pour the strained cold brew over a glass filled with ice. If the coffee tastes particularly strong, add a little cold water until it reaches the strength you prefer. I like to keep the coffee relatively smooth and slightly strong because the creamy Bomb Pop-flavored topping will add sweetness and richness later.

Step 2: Make the Bomb Pop-Flavored Cream

Pour your chilled cream mixture into a clean, compatible whipped cream dispenser. Attach the appropriate food-grade BombPop Flavored cream charger and charge the dispenser according to its instructions.

Give the dispenser a gentle shake and test a small amount first. I usually look for a texture that is thick enough to sit on top of the cold brew but still soft enough to mix into the coffee when I take a sip.

One thing I learned from making flavored whipped toppings at home is that the foam should complement the coffee rather than completely cover it. A thick layer can look impressive, but a slightly lighter topping often gives you a better coffee-to-cream balance.

Step 3: Build the Coastal Cold Brew

Pour the chilled cold brew into your serving glass, leaving some space at the top. Then slowly dispense the whipped cream over the surface.

For a more dramatic homemade café look, I like to build the topping in a gentle spiral rather than filling the entire glass with one thick layer. This gives the drink a softer appearance and makes it easier to control how much cream ends up in each sip.

If you want extra visual contrast, you can finish it with a small amount of colorful edible garnish or a light drizzle of syrup. I would keep the decoration simple, though, because the flavored cream is already doing most of the work.

Step 4: Taste and Adjust

This is the part I wouldn't skip when making the drink at home. Take a sip before adding anything else.

If the coffee tastes too strong, add a little more cream. If the drink feels too sweet, use more cold brew or reduce the amount of topping next time. If you want a stronger fruity impression, make the flavored cream slightly more prominent instead of adding lots of sugar directly to the coffee.

The nice thing about making this at home is that you can adjust the ratio to your own taste rather than following a fixed café recipe.

My Tips for Making It Taste More Like a Café Drink

Keep Everything Cold

Cold brew should be properly chilled before you build the drink, and the cream mixture should also be cold before going into the dispenser. This helps the topping maintain a better texture and prevents the ice from melting too quickly.

Don't Overload the Glass

More topping does not necessarily mean a better drink. I usually start with a moderate layer and add more only if I feel the coffee needs additional sweetness or creaminess.

Let the Coffee Stay the Star

Even though the Bomb Pop flavor makes the drink more playful, I still want to taste the coffee. Choosing a flavorful but not overly bitter cold brew makes a noticeable difference.

For example, Beach City Coffee's House Blend has tasting notes of dark chocolate and roasted nuts, while its Dawn Patrol Espresso Blend features dark chocolate and maple syrup notes. Those kinds of naturally sweet and rich coffee flavors can provide a useful foundation for a dessert-inspired cold drink.

Final Thoughts

As a home cook, I don't think recreating a café-style cold brew needs to involve complicated equipment or a long list of ingredients. The easiest approach is to start with a good cold brew and then make the topping the interesting part.

If you're already planning to take advantage of Beach City Coffee's National Coffee Day and Fair Trade Month promotion, this is also a fun way to turn the coffee you have at home into something that feels a little more special.
